Starting Soon: Sewer System Smoke Testing

This summer, starting in May, we will conduct smoke testing in Oak Grove ahead of planned sewer system upgrades. We know it can be concerning to see smoke coming from the ground, so we wanted to provide you with advance notice and share what to expect.

Map showing the approximate area for OLWS smoke testing scheduled from May 11 to July 13 in Oak Grove and surrounding regions.

What is smoke testing?

Smoke testing is a method for finding cracks and other problems in the sewer system. It allows us to identify areas that require repair or replacement.

How does it work?

A white, odorless vapor (colloquially called “smoke”) is blown through sewer pipes. If there are cracks or openings, the vapor rises to the surface through the ground, showing us where repairs are needed.

Is it safe?

Yes. The vapor is non-toxic to people, pets, and plants.

What to expect during testing

A sunny street scene with smoke rising from a manhole, surrounded by trees and residential buildings.

During testing, you may see small amounts of test smoke coming from roof vents, perimeter drains, or manholes. The smoke should not enter your home or business. If it does, it usually comes from a rarely used toilet, sink, or floor drain. To prevent smoke from entering your home during testing, we suggest pouring 3 or 4 cups of water into rarely used connections to seal the trap (the U- or J-shaped portion of pipe that creates an airtight seal between your home and the sewer system). It’s a good idea to do this periodically to ensure sewer gases don't enter your home.

If you do see smoke inside your home or business during testing, please contact the outside field crews working in your area for assistance.
