Heavy Rains Lead to Wastewater Overflows on December 9
(December 9, 2025) – On the morning of Tuesday, December 9, OLWS staff responded to several sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs) caused by heavy rains. The following locations were affected:
- Kellogg Creek near Park St. & McLoughlin Blvd.
- A manhole near River Forest Lake in Oak Grove. As of this afternoon, this overflow has stopped.
- The Willamette River near Lift Station #2 (approximately 1706 SE Oak Shore Ln). A lift station is a facility that transports wastewater to our plant for treatment.
- A manhole near Lift Station #6 (approximately 5768 Glen Echo Ave), near the Glen Echo Wetlands.
Sanitary sewer overflows occur when untreated sewage discharges into waterways or streets. During an overflow and for 48 hours afterwards, the public is advised to avoid contact with standing water, creeks, and the river due to potentially elevated bacteria levels. Staff have placed signs at the spill sites to inform the public to avoid contact with the water.
The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and other partner agencies connected with the Willamette River have also been notified.
